Biography

Dr. J. Patrick Neary is an exercise physiologist and Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies at the University of Regina. He has developed an independent research program over the past 17 years to examine the pathophysiology of mild traumatic brain injury or sport-related concussion which was funded nationally by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), and provincially by the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation (SHRF). His research in this area has confirmed that transient cerebrovascular (blood flow regulation) and cardiovascular (heart rate variability, blood pressure) disturbances occur following a concussion. More recently Dr. Neary has discovered in this research that phytocannabinoids have a positive effect on heart and brain physiology, which has led to our recent publication “Neuroprotection following Concussion: The Case for Cannabidiol.” He is an active Board Member of the Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association.
