Brain injuries and neurodegenerative diseases have been shown to damage the connections between brain and body. Helius Medical Technologies, a company focused on neurological wellness, is on a mission to develop technologies that amplify the brain’s ability to heal itself.
The Portable Neuromodulation Stimulator (PoNS™) is an innovative, non-pharmaceutical solution for the treatment of balance deficit due to mild-to-moderate traumatic brain injury or the treatment of gait deficit/walking issues from mild and moderate symptoms of multiple sclerosis It is to be used in conjunction with physical therapy.
The device consists of a controller and mouthpiece, which delivers mild electrical stimulation to the surface of the tongue. The tongue is used because its dense nerve endings connect with the nerves in the brain. The stimulation, combined with rehabilitative exercises, is believed to help strengthen the neural connections associated with balance and walking.
PoNS™ is offered at clinics across Canada as part of a 14-week treatment. After selecting a clinic, a Certified PoNS™ Trainer works with patients to design an individualized program and will continue to support them throughout the process.
Combining in-clinic and in-home use of the device, PoNS Treatment™ is available in over 30 clinics across the country and has helped many Canadians improve their walking ability and as a result, realize their potential.
The device is intended for use as a short term treatment (14 weeks) of chronic balance deficit due to mild-to-moderate traumatic brain injury and is to be used in conjunction with physical therapy.
The device is intended for use as a short term treatment (14 weeks) of gait deficit due to mild and moderate symptoms from MS and is to be used in conjunction with physical therapy.
